Should I Make My Own Coils or Buy Them?

Yesterday, I went to my local vape store and picked up a couple of pre-made fused clapton coils. The container has 10 pieces of coils that are 6 wraps each with a reading of around 0.2 ohms. It doesn't say what type of wire used but I believe it is kanthal.

For those of you who are already experienced vapers will know for a fact that making your own coils sometimes becomes a tedious task. From choosing the gauge of the core to stretching it out then installing it to the machine that twists the coils and all the other processes that makes it somewhat not worthwhile. And let us not forget the fact that after you made the coils you will have to build them as well before you install them in your rebuildable atomizer.

So what do you do? Initially you might opt to purchase a pre-made wire which comes in different types and gauges then build your own coils with it. They are typically packaged in 1.5 meters which can produce at least 5 pairs of coils but this may vary depending on the build you use. Just a quick FYI, the wire thickness is measured in gauges and the general rule is that the higher the gauge the thinner the wire.

But if you are really lazy and just wanted to change your gunky coils without having to deal with twisting and tightening of the wires you might get a pre-made coil like I did. Now all you have to do is clip the legs of the wire and install them to your atomizer and you're good to go.

If you are new to vaping and just started figuring out how your mod functions or what kind of flavors you wanted the chances are you don't even want to dabble at building your own coils let alone make your own wires. What you do is that you go to your local store, buy some pre-made wire and let your good old shopkeeper build and install them for you. Are you guilty of that? I know I am.

But the question you might be asking yourself right now is: does it matter? Does it really make a difference with the vaping experience if you buy pre-made coils versus if you made your own coils? Well, there are benefits to making your own coils as well as to buying them but the difference to the vaping experience is all up to you.

As stated previously, with pre-made coils there is nothing more that needs to be done except installing them to your rebuildable atomizer. These coils already have the resistance rating so you already have an idea of how much power you can use it with. But since it is pre-made, you are stuck with whatever its preset is. If the coil you purchase has a resistance rating of around 0.2 ohms and you suddenly felt that this is not working for you or somehow the vapor is not that warm well you can't just go and decrease the loop of the coil to have a low resistance build because that will defeat the purpose of buying a pre-made coil in the first place. Also, I'm not really sure since I don't generally use pre-made coils but I think if you are looking for something specific say a 0.10 ohm coil with 30g core wrapped on a 24g nichrome you might have a hard time finding one.

If you are looking to get into making your own wires you must be prepared as this could be quite a pain. First off, you need to know what type of wire you are going to use for the cores as well as the gauge as this will affect the resistance of the actual finished product. Then you will set it up with a wire tool which of course you should know how to operate because if not, it can cause overlap of wires which is something that you don't want to see. After you have completed the whole wire making process you should not forget that in order to use them you should also build them into a coil.

Once you get the hang of making your own wires you will surely reap its benefits. For instance, if you are more inclined to warmer vapors and know about your resistances you have the option to build a coil with 4-5 wraps. Or if you are more of a voltage vaper you can simply build a 10 wrap coil with a resistance of 0.4 to 0.6 ohms. But using a pre-made coil is not that bad either. A coil rated at 0.2 or 0.4 resistance can still produce a warm vapor depending on how much power you use on your mod. Again this is all based on your preference but hey, knowing how to make your own wire is a great piece of information that can be beneficial to your vaping journey.
